How are you celebrating Pride month?

Foy's Arcade Events, Hybrid, Networking

It’s Pride Month at Foy’s Arcade and we’re reflecting on our recent event for the Department of Transport Victoria’s IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex discrimination, and Transphobia) Day.

It was a pleasure to be a part of such an important panel and networking event, and for us to facilitate and assist in representing the LGBTIQ+ community. IDAHOBIT day brings awareness to the challenges (yet to be overcome) and celebrates the collective progress of the many LGBTIQ+ initiatives.

We were dismayed to learn some of the sobering statistics around violence and discrimination against LGBTIQ+ people as a whole, but also issues facing transgender people like unemployment, financial troubles, and mental health issues.

We heard real stories of people with lived experience, who shed light on the daily struggles they have with simple tasks such as taking public transport, conversations in the workplace and at home, discrimination when applying for official documentation requiring identification, which can entail abuse and trauma.

Overall, the outlook was incredibly positive, with improvements and education at the forefront of Victorian Government Departments. We look forward to a progressive future and to see the results from these combined LGBTIQ+ initiatives at the next event at Foy’s Arcade!
